The Welsh Government has announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in new trains, drivers, and crew to increase rail services on a Welsh rail network by 50%. The focus will be on the north Wales mainline, with changes to four level crossings to allow for increased speed restrictions and capacity expansion of up to 40%. An £800 million investment will go towards new trains, driver recruitment, and crew hiring.
Additionally, a temporary footbridge will be installed at Pensarn with the potential to become permanent, while two footpath crossings will be closed. Nearby crossings in Prestatyn will also be shut down, and a temporary speed restriction will be lifted. These initiatives are subject to consultation to gather public feedback.
In parallel, Network Rail and Transport for Wales are evaluating the permanent closure of a footpath crossing on the branch line in Deganwy. Welsh transport minister Ken Skates highlighted that this collaborative effort between Network Rail, Transport for Wales, and the UK and Welsh governments has led to these developments.
Marie Daly, Chief Customer and Culture Officer at TfW, expressed enthusiasm about the investments, which aim to enhance customer experience, connectivity, and rail services in North Wales. Emma Osborn from Network Rail emphasised the commitment to improving railway safety and implementing timetable enhancements for communities in North Wales.
