Weight-loss doctor says five healthy foods cause people to gain weight

A weight-loss doctor has explained that five traditionally healthy foods can inadvertently cause people to gain weight. Sticking to a healthy diet is crucial for many individuals striving to lose fat and achieve weight loss goals. However, overindulging in certain healthy foods instead of consuming them in moderation could impede successful fat loss efforts.

Professor Franklin Joseph from Dr Frank’s weight loss clinic emphasised the importance of choosing the right foods to maintain a healthy diet. He warned against overindulging simply because foods are perceived as beneficial. Weight loss fundamentally involves using more calories than consumed, and excessive eating, even of nutritious foods, can lead to fat gain. While items like whole grains, nut butters, and avocados contain essential nutrients such as healthy fats and fibre, moderation is key to avoid overconsumption.

Professor Joseph highlighted that some commercial products can have high levels of added sugars and refined carbohydrates. Hence, it is advisable to scrutinise food labels to be aware of what is being consumed. Ensuring a diverse range of foods from different groups is crucial to provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals for optimal health.

Dried fruits, while rich in vitamins and minerals, are high in natural sugars and calories, making excessive consumption inadvisable. Avocados, despite their healthy fats and nutrients, are calorie-dense and should be consumed in moderation. Whole grains, such as bread, rice, and pasta, provide fibre and other health benefits but should not be consumed excessively to prevent a sneak increase in caloric intake.

Nut butters, a source of healthy fats and proteins, may also contain added sugars, leading to increased calorie consumption if not monitored. Additionally, some breakfast cereals are loaded with added sugar and refined carbs, potentially causing energy spikes and crashes, along with high caloric content.

Maintaining awareness of food choices and practising moderation with healthy foods can aid in achieving weight loss goals effectively.
