A man in Wales has spoken out about the deplorable living conditions in his council flat, which he claims have led to his partner’s grandad being hospitalised with a lung infection. Brandon Handleigh, aged 19, has been enduring what he describes as “atrocious” conditions since moving into his partner’s grandparent’s flat in November 2022. Issues with the flat began around three years ago when they noticed moisture on the walls and floor following the replacement of a kitchen drimaster, a device meant to lower humidity.
Despite intervention from Swansea Council in March 2023, where the walls were stripped, the problem persisted with clumps of plaster falling off. The situation worsened with black mould spreading throughout the flat, covering furniture and creating an unbearable smell of rotting food. Brandon, who struggles with anxiety, expressed concerns about his health and the impact of the mould. He revealed that his partner’s grandad, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, was hospitalised due to a lung infection allegedly caused by the black mould spores.
Despite numerous inspections by Swansea Council, Brandon believes more action is needed to resolve the ongoing issue. The flat is also affected by a stream running beneath it, which Brandon suspects is exacerbating the problem. A broken dehumidifier adds to their troubles. Brandon expressed frustration at the lack of progress following inspections and repairs promised by the council. He recounted a recent inspection where they were informed they were generating too much heat, despite not using heating.
The spokesperson for Swansea Council responded, stating that efforts have been made to address the tenant’s concerns, including repairs and the installation of a dehumidifier. The council has pledged £55 million towards maintaining housing standards in its properties. Despite these efforts, Brandon and his family continue to face deteriorating living conditions and health concerns due to the persistent issue of black mould in their flat.
