This isn’t a new concept – many savvy shoppers regularly manage to save items destined for the bin and turn them into delicious meals for mere pennies. However, with so many people now aware of the benefits of shopping for reduced items at certain times, it can often be a gamble if there’s enough to go around.
Aldi often marks fresh items – like fruit, vegetables and bread – down in price as they approach the end of their shelf life. These discounts could range from 10% to 30%. In a TikTok video, Hot Deals UK claims that Aldi’s timing for these reductions is slightly different to other supermarkets, like Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s. While most supermarkets wait until the end of the day (around 6pm) to start marking products down, Aldi does the opposite, according to Hot Deals UK. In a TikTok video, a member of the team states: “Unlike other stores, [Aldi] actually do this in the mornings so the best time to bag a bargain is 8am when the store opens. “You’ll be able to bag bargains on fresh food produce that’s simply near its best before date.” Most Aldi stores open from 8am and usually close at 10pm daily, reports the Mirror, with shorter Sunday hours being the only exception. Newbies to reduced sticker shopping should know that Aldi doesn’t just have different times it sets markdowns, the store stickers are also different. Instead of yellow stickers, you’ll need to look out for red ones. To help combat food waste and save on your shopping costs, ALDI has teamed up with the Too Good to Go initiative to offer customers a “Surprise Bag” containing £10 worth of surplus ALDI food for just £3.30. The contents of each bag are unknown until opened, providing an element of surprise. With limited supply based on unsold discounted items, those interested in snagging one of these bags should use the Too Good To Go app after 10pm to reserve for collection the following day.
Difference between best before and use-by date? Understanding food date labels is crucial in reducing unnecessary waste. The Food Standards Agency clarifies that ‘best before’ dates pertain to quality, indicating that food might not taste as good after the specified date but remains safe to eat. This applies to goods like frozen, dried, or tinned products and even some cheeses. In contrast, the ‘use-by’ date concerns safety, marking the last moment when food can be consumed safely up until midnight of that date unless it’s been properly cooked or frozen. Items with a quicker expiration, such as meats and prepared salads, will usually carry a use-by label.
