Young trees in a popular park in Barry have fallen victim to vandalism, causing significant damage estimated at £3,000. The Vale of Glamorgan Council is facing a costly repair bill after six trees were snapped in Pencoedtre Park. The park, known for its recreational amenities like a skateboard park, toddler play area, splash pad, and MUGA, also harboured these young trees that had been growing for a decade.
The act of vandalism took place between 6.00pm on Saturday, August 17, and 9.00am on Monday, August 19. South Wales Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting them on 101, quoting reference 2400278596. This incident has left the council frustrated, as they expressed on Facebook that the destruction not only cost money but undid years of care and growth.
Sadly, this is not an isolated case, as another park, Brewery Park in Cardiff, has also fallen prey to vandals destroying trees. The council is seeking cooperation from residents to prevent such incidents in the future, as it affects the community’s shared spaces. The Vale of Glamorgan Council highlighted on social media the loss of the trees, emphasising the impact on both finances and efforts put into maintaining the park for the community’s enjoyment.
In response to the vandalism, South Wales Police are actively investigating the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice.
