Rentokil has raised a concern about a potential ‘biting insect invasion’ as the weather in the UK is expected to heat up over the coming week. The rise in temperatures, with some areas reaching well into the 20Cs, is likely to create favourable conditions for biting insects such as midges and mosquitoes. Rentokil reported a 60% increase in activity of these insects between April and July 2024 compared to the same period last year, attributing the surge to the wet and humid weather.
While the risk of disease transmission from mosquitoes and biting insects in the UK is low, their bites can cause irritation and allergic reactions in some cases. These insects can breed quickly, with a short development cycle from eggs to adults. They tend to dwell near calm water, where their larvae thrive. Mosquitoes are known to be most active in biting at dawn or dusk, aligning with their feeding patterns.
Paul Blackhurst, the technical academy head at Rentokil Pest Control, advised people to be vigilant when outdoors, especially in the evening when biting insects are most active. He emphasised the discomfort caused by insect bites and offered simple preventive measures. Using insect repellents, installing screens on windows and doors, and eliminating standing water where insects breed are recommended methods to reduce the risk of bites and potential infestations.
