An expert has advised on the nine common food items that should be stored in the fridge to prevent spoilage and reduce health risks. Many people tend to keep these items in cupboards, leading to premature deterioration and the need for disposal. According to research by catering experts Alliance Online, UK shoppers could be throwing away £340 worth of spoiled food annually, amounting to a substantial £21,420 over a typical lifetime. The Food Standards Agency reported 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness in the UK in 2022.
The list of essential items to refrigerate includes sauces like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, which should be stored in the fridge if used slowly to prevent bacterial growth. Lemons, oranges, and limes last longer when chilled as the cool temperature prevents them from drying out. Opened red wine should be resealed and refrigerated to slow down oxidation and maintain freshness for around five days. Eggs should be refrigerated to protect against salmonella and preserve taste and quality.
Butter can be kept at room temperature for up to two weeks but storing a small amount at a time is recommended for spreadability, while the rest should be stored in the fridge. Apples benefit from refrigeration to slow down the ripening process due to the ethylene gas they produce. Jam, marmalade, cream liqueur, and pure maple syrup should also be refrigerated for extended freshness and to prevent spoilage.
Harvey Richards from Alliance Online highlighted the importance of following recommended storage practices to maximise food shelf life, potentially saving money and reducing the risk of food-related illnesses. Incorrect storage practices not only lead to wastage but can also increase the chances of food poisoning incidents. By adhering to proper refrigeration guidelines, individuals can safeguard their health, save money, and reduce food wastage significantly.
