The Royal Mint has announced the release of new commemorative 50p coins featuring The Gruffalo’s Child to mark 20 years since the story’s first publication. The brave monster is depicted alongside Mouse in the wintry deep dark wood, using original artwork from the book’s illustrator Axel Scheffler. The Gruffalo’s Child, a sequel to the much-loved tale by Julia Donaldson and Scheffler, has been a favourite in children’s literature, earning numerous awards since its release in 2004.
The collectible coin will not enter general circulation but will be available in various precious metal finishes on the Royal Mint’s website. Some of the coins, struck at the Royal Mint’s headquarters in South Wales, will feature colour in their designs. This new coin follows The Gruffalo’s previous appearances on 50p coins in 2019, both alone and with Mouse.
Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, expressed excitement about featuring The Gruffalo’s Child on the coin, highlighting the enduring popularity of the story. Julia Donaldson shared her delight in seeing The Gruffalo’s Child honoured on her own 50p coin, hoping fans will treasure it as a memento of the 20th anniversary. Illustrator Axel Scheffler also expressed gratitude for having yet another coin celebrating The Gruffalo and its offspring.
The Royal Mint has previously featured other beloved children’s characters on coins, including Beatrix Potter creations, Paddington, and The Snowman. The new Gruffalo’s Child 50p coin is a tribute to the enduring appeal of this beloved children’s story, capturing the essence of the characters in intricate detail for collectors to enjoy.
