Vital news over best time to take common life-saving pill after new research

In a recent study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2024, researchers have suggested that people should take blood pressure (BP) medication at a time of day that suits them best. The study, based on data from five trials involving nearly 47,000 patients, found no significant difference in outcomes when taking the medication in the evening compared to the morning. Professor Ricky Turgeon from the University of British Columbia stated that patients should take their once-daily BP-lowering medications at a time that aligns with their preferences and circumstances.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects approximately one in three adults in the UK and is a significant risk factor for various diseases. While high blood pressure may not display symptoms, medications can help prevent severe complications like heart disease, stroke, and kidney issues. These medications target different parts of the cardiovascular system to reduce blood pressure levels. The timing of blood pressure medication intake has long been debated, with some experts advocating for evening administration due to the potential impact on nighttime blood pressure and heart disease outcomes.

The research team, led by Professor Turgeon, analysed data from five trials to investigate the effects of night-time versus morning administration of BP-lowering medications. Their conclusion was that timing did not affect outcomes, including secondary events like fractures, glaucoma, and cognitive issues. Professor Bryan Williams from the British Heart Foundation emphasized the importance of consistent medication intake, regardless of the specific timing, to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes associated with high blood pressure.

The study’s findings support the notion that patients should prioritise daily medication adherence over specific timing preferences. By examining data from tens of thousands of trial participants, this research sheds light on the optimal approach for taking BP medication. Overall, the message remains clear: consistent use of blood pressure tablets is crucial for managing and mitigating the risks associated with hypertension.
