An urgent warning has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) regarding a potential surge in cases of a dangerous disease as children prepare to return to school. Measles cases in England have reached their highest level in over a decade, with numerous outbreaks reported across the country since last autumn. So far this year, there have been 2,387 confirmed cases of measles, a significant increase from the 362 cases reported in the entirety of 2023.
Measles is commonly identified by a rash and typically resolves within a week; however, in severe instances, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia, meningitis, blindness, and seizures, particularly in unvaccinated young children. To combat the rising cases, the UKHSA is urging parents to ensure their children receive all doses of the MMR vaccine, which offers protection against measles, mumps, and rubella.
NHS national director for vaccinations and screening, Steve Russell, emphasised the importance of vaccination, stating that measles can be extremely dangerous. While efforts have led to more unvaccinated children under five years old receiving protection, there is still work to be done. The MMR vaccine is typically administered to children at one year old and again at three years and four months.
Dr. Vanessa Saliba, a UKHSA consultant epidemiologist, highlighted the vital role of vaccination in preventing unnecessary suffering among children and emphasised the need for parents to check their child’s vaccination records and seek guidance from GP practices to ensure they are up to date with all vaccinations, including the MMR jab.
Symptoms of measles usually start with cold-like signs such as a high temperature, cough, and red, sore eyes, followed by a rash that spreads across the body. Parents are encouraged not to delay in getting their children vaccinated, as measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in environments where children are not adequately protected. It is crucial for parents to act promptly to protect their children and prevent the spread of this infectious disease.
