Police have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of a mysterious illness affecting residents of an apartment block in Cardiff Bay. The incident unfolded at Bay Chambers on West Bute Street in Butetown, triggering an alert on Thursday evening. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of residents feeling unwell, with symptoms resembling carbon monoxide poisoning. Sixteen residents experienced nausea and headaches, five were taken to the hospital for tests, and one was kept overnight for observation. All 60 residents were evacuated from the building.
Public Health Wales conducted air quality tests ruling out carbon monoxide poisoning. A cautionary ‘do not drink’ advisory was issued for the affected flats as a precaution, with bottled water being provided. Following investigations, residents were permitted to return home. Cardiff council’s incident support team and family housing support staff were present to assist emergency services during the evacuation, arranging alternative accommodation if needed, which was ultimately unnecessary.

Residents have been advised not to use tap water until further notice, with authorities taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
