Common spit colours and what they can tell you about your health

The colour of your spit can offer insights into your health, experts say. It’s recommended to observe your saliva before brushing your teeth, as toothpaste can alter its appearance. Being aware of any changes is crucial for maintaining good health. Normally, spit is clear and watery, but factors like health issues, food, and drinks can affect its colour. Dr. Vikas Prinja, also known as @Thelondondentist on TikTok, shared a video outlining what different spit colours might indicate. He suggests seeking advice from a GP if concerned.

Problems with saliva can stem from various issues, such as infections, autoimmune disorders, or certain medications. The NHS recommends consulting a healthcare professional to identify the root of any abnormalities. Dr. Prinja outlined some scenarios: White, but sticky, indicates dehydration or dry mouth, common in cancer patients undergoing treatment. Green signals your body is fighting an infection, whereas red (during brushing) may point to gum disease. Brown/black or red (when not brushing) could indicate medical conditions like pneumonia or tuberculosis. Black spit is often seen in smokers.

Dry mouth is a common issue for dentists and GPs to address. It typically doesn’t indicate a serious problem and can be managed with simple home remedies. Drinking plenty of cold water throughout the day and keeping water by your bedside at night can help alleviate dryness. Using ice cubes, ice lollies, or sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production. Maintaining a strict dental hygiene routine by brushing twice daily and using alcohol-free mouthwash can help manage dry mouth effectively.
