Doctor Issues Urgent Warning for Weight Loss Shakes – ‘Avoid Them Like the Plague’
Despite being one of the most popular weight loss products, one doctor issued a stark warning against weight loss shakes, warning that they will “increase weight gain over time.” Dr Rupy Aujla discussed dieting and weight loss on his podcast, The Doctor’s Kitchen, addressing common questions on the pros and cons of weight loss shakes.
Dr Aujla strongly advised against using weight loss shakes whenever possible. He explained that these shakes provide a short burst of energy and calorie reduction that can significantly decrease the body’s basal metabolic rate. Lowering this rate can lead to a situation where the body uses less energy from food, potentially resulting in weight gain even if you return to your previous eating habits.
The doctor highlighted the risk of yo-yo dieting caused by weight loss shakes, particularly affecting chronic dieters or those who frequently resort to crash diets. Dr Aujla warned that this cycle of weight loss and gain can ultimately lead to increased weight over time. He emphasised the importance of avoiding weight loss shakes and suggested alternative strategies for weight loss.
In contrast to his stance on weight loss shakes, Dr Aujla expressed more reservations about fat-loss pills, stating that the risks associated with these pills may not be justified by the potential benefits. He recommended a selection of foods and supplements, such as increasing protein intake, using fibre supplements, incorporating green tea and caffeine products, and even having a cup of coffee before exercising to support weight loss efforts.
Dr Aujla’s insights underscore the importance of making informed choices about weight loss methods and prioritising sustainable and healthy approaches to achieving weight loss goals. It is crucial for individuals to consult healthcare professionals and nutrition experts to develop tailored and well-rounded strategies for effective weight management.
