‘Tudor’ health condition Henry VIII had still affects many due to ‘common mistakes’

A Tudor health condition that was once afflicting the notorious Henry VIII is still impacting one in every 500 people today, as stated by experts who caution against common mistakes that exacerbate the condition. Leg ulcers, though unpleasant and painful, can now be treated more effectively than in historical times. Dr. Mark Bratby, a consultant interventional radiologist at Veincentre, raised concerns about people still making errors that amplify their symptoms.

Leg ulcers are skin breaks typically found on the lower leg or feet, developing from skin breakdown to reveal underlying tissue. These ulcers can initially be small but quickly enlarge, becoming increasingly uncomfortable, painful, and emitting odours due to skin breakdown and infection. Venous ulcers are the most prevalent type of leg ulcers. The NHS treatment protocol for venous ulcers typically includes cleaning, dressing, and compression procedures. Veincentre offers a treatment called EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) and foam sclerotherapy, which has shown to provide quicker and longer-lasting results.

Despite these treatment options, Dr. Bratby has observed individuals making recurring mistakes in managing their ulcers. These mistakes include attempting DIY treatments, inadequate compression that is crucial for addressing poor circulation, overlooking the crucial role of nutrition in the healing process, and dismissing warning signs of conditions that can lead to leg ulcers.

Symptoms to watch out for include persistent swelling and leg aches, skin discolouration, dry, itchy skin, eczema, and hardened skin around the foot and ankle. Since approximately 60% of leg ulcers stem from varicose veins, individuals with venous issues should be vigilant for other signs of ulcers. Getting treatment for leaky veins can prevent further complications such as leg ulcers. Proper management of leg ulcer symptoms can lead to effective healing and long-term relief for sufferers.
