The UK Government has initiated an investigation into Oasis ticket prices following significant surges in costs. The Culture Secretary has expressed dismay at the exorbitant rates charged, describing the situation as “incredibly depressing.” This move comes after fans were shocked to find themselves asked to pay more than double the face value for standard tickets – with prices soaring from £148 to £355 on Ticketmaster.
The government had previously promised to implement measures to protect individuals from being exploited by ticket touts. In response to the escalating prices, Lisa Nandy MP conveyed the government’s commitment to prioritizing fans’ interests in the music sector. The forthcoming consultation will address concerns regarding the transparency and impact of dynamic pricing, including the technologies that encourage it.
In the midst of the ticket chaos, prominent figures like government minister Lucy Powell found themselves grappling with the inflated costs. Expressing discontent, fans labeled the fluctuating prices as “sickening” and “scandalous.” Ticketmaster has defended itself against backlash, asserting that ticket pricing is determined by event organizers based on market values.
Despite technical glitches and fans being erroneously flagged as bots during the ticket rush, all 17 shows, including the Cardiff performances, were swiftly sold out. Individuals, including House of Commons leader, Ms. Powell, recounted their experiences of purchasing tickets at significantly higher costs than initially quoted.
The promoters for Oasis gigs, including Manchester-based SJM Concerts, Irish MCD, and Scottish DF Concerts & Events, are yet to comment on the situation. Since the announcement of Oasis’ reunion after a decade-long feud between the Gallagher brothers, concerns have been raised over secondary ticket resale platforms like Viagogo, which advertised seats at exorbitant prices.
Oasis has advised fans to use verified reselling platforms like Ticketmaster and Twickets to avoid cancellations by promoters. The band has been approached for further comment on the matter. As concert-goers await further developments, the probe initiated by the UK Government aims to address the escalating ticket prices within the music industry.
