Merthyr Valleys Homes has submitted a planning application to Merthyr Tydfil Council to repurpose the former Bontnewydd Hall in Trelewis into a bungalow designed for individuals with complex care needs. The hall, located in Bontnewydd Terrace, Trelewis, was previously leased by the trustees of Trelewis OAP Hall Association. However, due to Covid-19 impacting community attendance and volunteer availability, the association is no longer able to operate the hall effectively.
In a covering letter accompanying the application, planning consultants Asbri Planning explained that the ongoing pandemic has significantly affected the trust’s ability to manage and maintain Bontnewydd Hall. As a result, the proposal aims to convert the hall into a bungalow suitable for individuals with complex care needs, offering facilities for carers to stay on-site.
The planned bungalow will cater to people with mobility concerns, featuring wheelchair access, wider doorways, and an adapted toilet. While no dedicated parking facilities are planned, on-street parking is available nearby on Bontnewydd Terrace. The bungalow conversion will provide affordable housing while repurposing the hall, which previously hosted community gatherings and events.
According to a review by Cadw’s online mapping service, the site of the former hall is not in close proximity to historical assets and is at low risk of flooding. The planning proposal is deemed acceptable in terms of preserving the character and appearance of the area, residential amenities, parking, sustainable transport provision, and ecological considerations.
With the transformation of Bontnewydd Hall into a bungalow for individuals with complex care needs, Merthyr Valleys Homes seeks to repurpose the space effectively while addressing the current challenges faced by the former community hall. The planning application now awaits consideration by Merthyr Tydfil Council.
