A police officer in Wales has been found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm after kicking his wife down the stairs, leaving her with a broken back. Cardiff Crown Court heard that Huw Orphan had been arguing with his wife, Amy Burley, via text messages before the incident occurred in April 2020. Orphan, who was a constable with Gwent Police at the time, denied intentionally causing harm, stating that he was trying to create distance between them during the argument when his leg accidentally made contact with her.
Although the jury found Orphan not guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, they found him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm in separate incidents. Orphan and his wife’s relationship deteriorated as they moved from Newport to Barry, culminating in the altercation on April 8, 2020. Orphan claimed his wife instigated the physical confrontation by grabbing his leg as he climbed the stairs, causing her to fall.
Despite his account, the prosecution argued that Orphan deliberately kicked his wife, resulting in her falling and sustaining serious injuries. The court also heard allegations that Orphan threatened his wife to give false information about her injuries to medical professionals. The judge requested a pre-sentence report before Orphan’s sentencing in October.
