A man who underwent gastric balloon surgery in Turkey for £2k has shared his regret about the procedure, which led to him throwing up daily for a year. Luke Hughes, 30, sought weight loss options after struggling with his size during lockdown, weighing 16st and unable to fit into a size 36. In January 2023, he travelled to Turkey for the surgery hoping it would help him slim down, but soon after being discharged, he began experiencing severe vomiting. Luke had to extend his stay in Turkey and upon returning to the UK, he sought medical attention at A&E. It was revealed that the gastric balloon had been fitted too high and overinflated, obstructing the passage of food and liquid into his stomach.
Over the next nine months, Luke suffered from constant nausea and had to eventually have the gastric balloon removed in September 2023. Despite losing 4st following the surgery, Luke shared that the experience left him physically and mentally drained. He described being constantly sick, struggling with basic activities, and feeling anxious about socializing due to the side effects of the surgery. Luke, a recruitment worker from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, expressed relief after having the balloon removed and emphasized the importance of caution when considering surgeries abroad.
Reflecting on his decision to undergo the procedure abroad, Luke highlighted the lack of aftercare and support he received following the surgery in Turkey. He recounted being led to the wrong hospital, signing papers without full understanding, and experiencing complications that were not adequately addressed by the clinic. Luke’s warning to others considering similar surgeries in foreign countries is clear: prioritize safety and thorough research before making such decisions.
