A family of six found themselves in a precarious situation on an Eryri peak and had to be rescued. The group were navigating Cnicht, part of the Moelwynion mountain range, when they lost their way in poor weather conditions last month and struggled to make their descent. After several unsuccessful attempts, they decided to call for help and set up a temporary camp next to a dam wall.
The Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team came to their aid, locating them and guiding them safely off the mountain. The team commended the family’s decision to stop and seek assistance, noting that some people “feel embarrassed” about needing help, North Wales Live reported.
A spokesperson from the rescue team said, “On Wednesday 21st August at around 17:30, a family of six reported being lost and unable to descend from the Cnicht area. Unfortunately, a turn in the weather and a change of route for their descent from Cnicht made it extremely hard for them to continue.”
“After several failed attempts to get themselves down, they made the right decision to call for help before nightfall. Luckily they were able to find a grid reference for their location on top of a dam wall; they sheltered from the wind behind the wall, used what they found around them for warmth and stayed put until the team arrived.”
The family, uninjured but cold, were given snacks, extra layers, and confidence ropes for the steep descent down to the awaiting team vehicles. The team stressed the importance of asking for help and staying in one place in such situations to ensure safety.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared and knowing when to seek assistance when faced with challenging conditions in the mountains. It also highlights the valuable work carried out by mountain rescue teams in ensuring the safety of those who venture into the great outdoors.
