Former Wales rugby captain Ken Owens has led tributes to a “passionate and dedicated” rugby player, Marc Beasley, who tragically passed away at the age of 37 due to a sudden heart attack. Described as a “top guy” and a friend to all, Marc was known for his fitness and commitment to the sport, having participated in an ironman competition just last year.
Ken Owens, who shared the rugby field with Marc during their childhood, joined many others in celebrating his life. In memory of Marc, a memorial rugby match was organised by Crymych Rugby Club, where Marc was a cherished member. The event raised over £36,000 for the Marc Beasley Fund, established to provide heart screenings not only for rugby players but also for the wider community.
The match, which saw 50 players from the club wearing special blue shirts, drew hundreds of spectators to Parc Lloyd Thomas in Pembrokeshire. Marc’s sister, Heulwen Beasley-Park, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, highlighting the significant impact the donations will have.
Reflecting on Marc’s character, friend Carwyn Rees described him as a dedicated and friendly individual, whose loss deeply affected everyone at the club. In a touching video message, Ken Owens fondly remembered Marc as a special person with whom he had shared precious memories on the rugby field.
