A woman in Swansea, Naomi Davies, has been sentenced to nine months in prison for a series of burglaries at food businesses on Wind Street. Davies committed a string of bizarre acts, including donning a chef’s jacket, turning off fridges, opening gas taps, and defecating on the floor. The incidents took place within a week and involved multiple food establishments in the city centre.
The first offence occurred at Las Iguanas restaurant when the manager found Davies wearing a chef’s jacket and behaving as if she worked there. Davies left upon request but had tampered with various areas of the building, including leaving human faeces on the floor and turning off the water supply. Subsequently, she broke into a kebab shop, stole money from the till, spoiled meat, and caused significant financial losses by turning off fridges and freezers.
Davies then entered a pub and rifled through employees’ belongings before assaulting the manager in the staff toilets. When confronted by police on Wind Street, she became aggressive and was arrested. The court heard that Davies had a history of mental health issues, homelessness, and her children being taken into care in 2014. Despite her troubled past, there were hopes for her rehabilitation with assistance from a charity upon her release.
In sentencing, Recorder Christian Jowett imposed a nine-month prison term for the various offences, to be served concurrently. Davies, who pleaded guilty to four counts of burglary and assault, will serve half the sentence in custody before being released on licence. The judge noted that Davies was unable to pay compensation or contribute towards costs due to her circumstances.
The case of Naomi Davies underscores complex social issues, including homelessness and mental health challenges. Despite the distressing nature of her crimes, there are indications of potential support and rehabilitation for her in the future.
