A woman’s life took an unexpected turn when a seemingly innocent pimple on her face led to the discovery of a rare and aggressive tumour that required major surgery. Maham, a 19-year-old student, shared her story on BBC’s Saving Lives in Cardiff, detailing how what appeared to be a minor skin issue turned out to be a daunting medical challenge.
Maham initially noticed a small bump on her jaw while watching TV, which she thought was a typical pimple. However, further examination revealed something more sinister beneath the surface. After consulting with a dentist who identified it as a cyst, Maham was referred to the maxillofacial department at the University Hospital of Wales.
Doctors discovered a 4cm tumour inside Maham’s jaw bone, necessitating the removal of half of her jaw, chin, and ten teeth in a complex and extensive surgery. The procedure involved reconstructing her jaw using bone and blood vessels from her leg, which was a success.
