DWP Looks Set to Give Pensioners Another £400 Boost
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is expected to provide pensioners with an additional £400 increase in their pensions, as reported by Wales Online. The potential rise comes as a result of a commitment made by the new government, aimed at boosting the overall pension amount for retirees.
According to the Treasury’s internal calculations, the full state pension could potentially increase by more than £400 per year due to the implementation of the triple lock policy in April. This adjustment would bring the total state pension to around £12,000 for the 2025/26 financial year, following a £900 raise in 2023. Additionally, those eligible for the secondary state pension pre-2016 might see a yearly increase of £300.
The new state pension system was introduced in 2016 to offer a sustainable foundation pension for individuals to supplement with their private savings. The final decision on the pension increment will rest with Secretary of State Liz Kendall, expected before the October budget. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has recently reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the triple lock policy until the end of the current parliament.
However, amidst this potential pension increase, there has been criticism over the government’s decision to remove the winter fuel allowance for many households. Recent analysis revealed that only around half of those who received the new state pension last year were actually getting the full weekly amount, with approximately 150,000 recipients receiving less than £100 per week. Royal London’s findings, based on Department for Work and Pensions data from spring 2023, indicated that a significant portion of pensioners were not receiving the full entitlement.
