Large sinkhole appears on Swansea road

A resident in Swansea has raised concerns after discovering a large sinkhole on a road. Michael Gardner noticed the significant cavity on Southward Lane in the Langland area of Swansea on Tuesday afternoon, September 3. Pictures of the sinkhole reveal exposed mains services and a sewerage pipe underground. The British Geological Survey (BGS) explains that sinkholes, also known as dolines, can result from various processes like dissolution, collapse, and erosion.

In some cases, sinkholes are formed from the surface dissolution of soluble rock, such as limestone, from exposure to heavy rainfall or acidic groundwater. While the UK has regions prone to sinkhole formation, most occurrences are small or in upland rural locations. Areas underlain by carboniferous limestones, like parts of Wales, Mendips south of Bristol, Peak District, and Yorkshire Dales, are highlighted by the BGS. Despite being more common in America, the UK has seen a rise in sinkhole incidents.

An example was in St Albans in October 2015 when a 65ft-wide and 33ft-deep sinkhole emerged on a street, leading to the evacuation of 20 residents. In case of encountering a sinkhole, it is advised to contact emergency services immediately and cordon off the area for safety reasons. Swansea Council is yet to provide a comment on the situation. Sinkholes can pose serious risks, and it is crucial for authorities to address them promptly to safeguard public safety.
