Shingles explained as Demi Moore off work and lost 20lbs

Demi Moore, the Hollywood legend, shared her experience with developing Shingles during the filming of her latest movie, leading her to take time off work and lose 20lbs. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, can be triggered by stress, causing a painful rash on one side of the body. Moore disclosed that she fell ill during the production of her film ‘The Substance,’ co-starring Margaret Qualley, describing it as a challenging experience. She mentioned that during her first week off when only Qualley was working, she contracted shingles, resulting in significant weight loss.

Duncan Reid, a Senior Pharmacist at Pharmacy2U, detailed that shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same one responsible for chickenpox. The infection can present with symptoms such as a tingly feeling, headache, or nausea, followed by a rash that appears within days, resembling chickenpox. The rash develops into blisters, which eventually scab over after a few weeks. While the rash heals, some individuals may experience lingering pain or discomfort in the affected area.

Although shingles is not typically life-threatening, certain groups, including pregnant individuals without prior chickenpox exposure, chemotherapy patients, and infants under a month old, are at higher risk. To prevent spreading the virus, individuals with shingles should avoid close contact activities and keep the rash covered and dry. Treatment options include managing pain with medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, or codeine. In some cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed by a doctor to reduce symptoms and prevent further virus multiplication.

Reid emphasised the importance of seeking medical attention promptly upon experiencing shingles. Early intervention can mitigate the effects and lower the risk of complications. He also mentioned that individuals aged 70-79 can receive a shingles vaccine through the NHS, urging people to take preventive measures to safeguard their health. Keeping the immune system strong through adequate sleep, a nutritious diet, and healthy lifestyle habits can also help ward off shingles later in life.

In conclusion, shingles can be a challenging condition, but with timely medical intervention and proper management, individuals affected by the infection can alleviate symptoms and reduce potential complications. By understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for shingles, individuals can better navigate this health issue and seek appropriate care to support their recovery.
