Dog owners in the UK seem to value their pets’ health and happiness more than their own well-being, a recent survey has revealed. The study found that seven in 10 dog owners are more concerned about their furry companions’ well-being than their own. Additionally, 43 per cent of respondents admitted they would only feed their dogs the same food that they would eat themselves.
To ensure their dogs’ happiness, most owners engage in activities like giving plenty of cuddles (79 per cent), belly rubs (77 per cent), and healthy treats (75 per cent). Interestingly, 73 per cent of dog owners prioritise their pet’s exercise needs over their own physical activity.
However, when it comes to seeking medical assistance, there is a stark difference in behaviour. The research found that for non-life-threatening conditions, people would wait an average of eight days to see a doctor for themselves but only three days to book a vet appointment for their pet.
Despite the best intentions of dog owners, a significant number lack knowledge about their dogs’ nutritional needs. The study, commissioned by dog food brand Butternut Box, revealed that 29 per cent of owners are unsure about the nutrients required for their dogs’ health. Reasons for this lack of understanding include not knowing what constitutes a healthy diet for dogs (34 per cent) and a lack of time to research different food options (27 per cent).
One in five respondents also cited a lack of understanding of their dogs’ dietary needs as a barrier to providing optimal nutrition. However, 30 per cent have recently considered their dog’s food choices. When selecting food for their pets, factors such as the dog’s enjoyment (47 per cent) outweigh nutritional value concerns (41 per cent), according to OnePoll figures.
To highlight the importance of feeding fresh food to dogs, Butternut Box has constructed a life-sized edible house for dogs at Sherwood Pines. This initiative aims to educate pet parents about healthy diets for dogs and showcase the ingredients in Butternut Box meals. David Nolan, co-founder of the brand, emphasised the significance of feeding fresh ingredients to provide dogs with essential nutrients for energy and muscle health.
In conclusion, the study underscores the deep care and concern that dog owners have for their pets’ well-being, highlighting the need for better education on proper nutrition and holistic care for canine companions.
