PIP claimants could face repayments after DWP overpayment error

PIP Claimants Warned of Potential Repayments Following DWP Overpayment Error

Recent reports from Wales Online have shed light on potential repayments that Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants could face due to an overpayment error by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The DWP attributed the primary cause of PIP overpayments to claimant error, where individuals failed to report changes in their circumstances, particularly improvements in their condition.

The DWP, responsible for providing State Pension and welfare benefits to approximately 22.7 million people across Great Britain, released its most recent figures in the 2024 Fraud and Error in the Benefit System report. The data revealed that benefit overpayments amounted to £9.7 billion in the last year, indicating an increase from the previous year’s total of £8.3 billion.

Introduced in 2013, PIP aims to support individuals facing additional costs due to long-term illness, disability, or mental or physical health conditions. The report highlighted that approximately £21.6 billion was spent on PIP in the past year, a substantial rise from the £17.7 billion recorded in 2022/23. The number of people receiving up to £737.20 each month has also reached a record-breaking high of 3.5 million.

Despite a decrease in overpayments from £200 million in 2022/23 to £90 million last year, claimants may still be required to repay money to the DWP. To report changes in circumstances, individuals can contact the PIP enquiry line at 0800 121 4433. The report outlined various circumstances that necessitate informing the DWP, including changes to daily living or mobility needs, leaving the country for an extended period, hospital stays, care homes, imprisonment, and changes in personal details.

Claimants are advised to stay informed about potential changes in their circumstances to avoid overpayments and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
