‘I put my symptoms down to stress – now I have five years to live’

A farmer from Rhuddlan in Denbighshire, John Saunders Davies, has shared his heartbreaking story of wrongly attributing his symptoms to stress when it turned out to be bowel cancer, leading to a prognosis of five years to live. John initially dismissed his bad stomach as work-related stress, only seeking medical help in August 2023, despite experiencing symptoms for five months prior. After undergoing tests, he was shocked to learn he had bowel cancer that had metastasised to his liver.

Following his diagnosis, John has been determined to raise awareness about cancer symptoms and the importance of timely medical consultations. He emphasises the crucial role his partner Emma played in encouraging him to seek medical attention, potentially altering the outcome. John’s cancer treatment has faced setbacks, with metastases recurring, but he remains positive and continues chemotherapy in hopes of extending his life.

To support those who have aided him during his illness, John is organising a fundraising event named Behind the Gates. Scheduled for September 14 at Pengwern Farm in Rhuddlan, the event aims to celebrate Welsh farming, with proceeds directed towards the hospital where John received treatment. Activities include a tractor run, stage performances, a farmers’ market, and more, culminating in John sharing his story to raise awareness about life-threatening symptoms.

Amid his battle, charities like RABI and Tenovus Cancer Care have provided crucial support to John, including counselling sessions that have aided his mental well-being. Understanding the importance of self-care, John stresses the significance of prioritising one’s health and accessing available support services. His event, Behind the Gates, serves as a platform to spotlight the challenges faced by farmers and to advocate for mental health awareness and support for those battling cancer.

Through his tireless efforts to promote awareness and offer support to his community, John hopes to make a difference in people’s lives and leave a lasting impact. The event symbolises his determination to spread messages of self-awareness and encourage individuals to seek help when needed. With an unwavering spirit, John remains focused on his mission to save lives and serve as a beacon of hope in his community.
