The UK’s Foreign Office issued an urgent warning to travellers heading to the EU, including popular holiday destinations like Spain, Italy, and Greece, starting from November 1. Everyone entering the EU will need to provide their photograph and fingerprints under the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES). The Foreign Office anticipates longer queues at border crossings once the system is in place.
The EES applies to all EU countries and the Schengen area, comprising 29 European countries, of which 25 are EU member states. British citizens will be required to register their biometric information upon entering the Schengen area. This process aims to create a digital record of individuals entering the EU to improve border security and combat illegal migration.
Travellers will have their fingerprints and photo captured upon arrival at the Schengen border, with checks expected to take a few minutes per person. However, there are concerns about potential chaos and delays during the initial implementation of the system. The EES is part of ongoing efforts to enhance border security, with plans for the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in 2025.
ETIAS will require travellers to submit information about themselves and pay a fee of 7 Euros before travelling to the Schengen area. The revamped border control measures aim to streamline entry procedures and strengthen security measures across EU borders. The Foreign Office advises travellers to familiarise themselves with the new requirements to ensure a smooth travel experience within the EU.
