The scheme aims to assist households claiming specific benefits, with notifications typically sent by energy suppliers. The discount is directly credited to the energy account or in the form of a top-up voucher for prepayment meters.
In Scotland, residents on low incomes must apply for the discount, while the offer is not available to Northern Irish residents. Additionally, the discount may also apply to gas bills if the supplier provides both gas and electricity services. Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount is automatic for those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, known as “core group one.” Others may qualify under “core group two” if they are on a low income, claim certain benefits, and have high energy costs.
Qualifying means-tested benefits include Income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Universal Credit, and others. The specific week for eligibility this year has not been confirmed yet, but it is expected to follow a similar process as in previous years. Not all utility providers participate in the scheme, so eligibility can vary. A list of previous participating suppliers is available on the DWP’s website, with confirmation pending for this year.
