As winter approaches, many people may start experiencing a range of health issues that can lead to longer waits to see a GP. However, there are alternatives available for certain conditions. While common colds and flu often just require rest and painkillers, more serious conditions may require immediate help. In such cases, visiting a local chemist can be a valuable option.
Pharmacists, who are now able to address more complex needs under the Pharmacy First scheme, can offer expert advice and over-the-counter treatments for minor illnesses and injuries. Rhysa Phommachanh, Health & Personal Care Specialist, emphasises that pharmacists can guide individuals on when to seek further help from a GP or another healthcare professional when symptoms suggest a more serious issue.
Pharmacies can provide treatment advice for various common conditions such as cold and flu symptoms, allergies, aches and pains, digestive issues, skin conditions, infections, eye problems, ear troubles, minor injuries, oral health issues, and even minor tests like blood pressure monitoring. To access treatment from a pharmacy, individuals can simply walk in or contact the pharmacist virtually.
When visiting a pharmacy, the pharmacist will speak to the individual privately, possibly perform an examination, and recommend the best course of action. Pharmacists may issue prescriptions for antibiotics or antivirals where necessary based on individual needs. With over 10,000 pharmacies in England signed up to Pharmacy First, access to these services is widespread.
For the seven common conditions, regular prescription charges will apply. Patients exempt from prescription charges will continue to be exempt. This streamlined access to pharmacy services helps alleviate pressure on GPs, allowing them to focus on patients with more urgent needs. If symptoms are severe or doubts persist, it is essential to consult a doctor, call 111, or visit A&E in emergencies.
