Great Ormond Street investigation following claims 721 children treated by ‘rogue’ surgeon

An investigation is underway at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London following claims that 721 children were treated by a “rogue” surgeon who allegedly left some with deformities and life-changing injuries. According to The Sunday Times, patients suffered severe injuries, including amputations, permanent deformities, and chronic pain. The report stated that 22 children underwent limb reconstruction surgery, with 13 cases categorised as severe, one victim being just four months old.

The father of a six-year-old boy treated by the surgeon claimed his son experienced “terrible pain” following a lower limb reconstruction procedure. Despite raising concerns, he was met with a dismissive attitude and felt his complaints were brushed aside. One child had to have a leg amputated due to post-operative complications, while another faces the risk of losing a limb. Parents reported children living in pain, with some left with legs of differing lengths up to 20cm, damaged muscles, nerve issues, and irreversible deformities.

Great Ormond Street Hospital, renowned for treating children with rare or complex conditions, confirmed the investigation and offered apologies to affected families. They are implementing improvements and have contacted all impacted patients and families under their duty of candour. The hospital stated that they will address the findings promptly and reflect on any wider learnings from the review.

An ongoing panel of five expert surgeons is conducting the review, anticipated to continue for another 18 months. The surgeon at the centre of the inquiry has chosen not to provide a statement to The Sunday Times. Great Ormond Street Hospital assured that they are prioritising patient safety and care, despite the distressing allegations, and are committed to addressing the issues raised by the investigation.

The hospital’s spokesperson conveyed apologies to affected families and underscored their commitment to addressing any harm identified. The institution aims to learn from the review to enhance their culture and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. As the world-famous hospital navigates this challenging situation, families impacted by the surgeon’s alleged actions can expect transparency, accountability, and support in their journey towards healing and justice.
