A recent study comparing the effects of vaping to smoking has revealed alarming findings on the impact of vaping on overall health. The study, which involved young participants, showed that individuals who vape perform as poorly as smokers in exercise testing. Researchers found that non-vapers outperformed both vapers and smokers in tests designed to measure exercise capacity.
Dr. Azmy Faisal, the study leader, highlighted previous research linking vaping to lung inflammation, damage, and harmful changes to blood vessels. The study, conducted on 60 young adults, with 20 non-smokers and non-vapers, 20 vapers, and 20 smokers, included exercise bike tests, blood tests, and ultrasound scans.
Results indicated that vapers had lower peak exercise capacity compared to non-smokers, similar to smokers. Additionally, both vapers and smokers showed impaired blood vessel function and struggled with breathing, muscle fatigue, and reduced fitness levels during exercise. These findings challenge the perception of vaping as a safer alternative to smoking.
Presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress, the study underscores the need for increased awareness of the health risks associated with vaping. Dr. Filippos Filippidis, Chair of the ERS Tobacco Control Committee, emphasized the importance of educating individuals, particularly young people, on the potential consequences of vaping on fitness and overall health.
