‘We bought an island for £24,000 – it was cheaper than a house deposit’

A couple’s unconventional decision to purchase an island to live on for less than £24,000 became a reality. Oliver Russell, 24, who grew up in California and Colorado, had always cherished his summers in Finland visiting friends and family. In August 2022, after moving to Finland and meeting his girlfriend Helena Tomaszewska, 20, they spotted an island for sale on a property website. The couple wasted no time and bought the two-and-a-half-acre island in March 2024 for approximately £23,700.

The island, vacant for a decade, required significant work before it could be inhabited. Oliver and Helena started by building a deck for their tent and constructing an outhouse. Their future plans include a summer cabin and sauna to enhance their island living experience. Oliver, an international business student, expressed his love for Finland and the country’s summer cottage culture, a tradition he hoped to make his own.

Despite the challenges of no prior construction experience, Oliver and Helena are determined to build everything themselves on their newfound paradise. Weekends are spent on the island as the couple work towards their dream of a summer cottage and sauna, taking inspiration from Finland’s sauna-centric lifestyle. Oliver highlighted the commitment required for their project, especially with both being students, but the rewarding experiences continue to motivate their efforts.

Their journey, although challenging, has brought new skills and opportunities for growth. The couple has embraced the learning curve and remain focused on creating a unique retreat on their island. The ultimate goal of building a log cabin and sauna showcases their dedication to their vision and the joy they find in their secluded haven.
