In the age of designer breeds and popular choices, certain breeds have unfortunately inherited health issues that can lead to significant veterinary bills for unsuspecting pet owners. Veterinarian Amir Anwary, known online as @amirthevet, has garnered a significant following by blending dance with professional advice. Anwary’s latest social media video highlighted five breeds that stand out as the most financially burdensome for owners.
The Goldendoodle claimed the fifth spot on the list. This crossbreed between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle is known for its friendly nature and low-shedding coat, making it attractive to allergy sufferers. However, the MarketWatch study revealed that this designer breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, with total costs over its 13-year lifespan estimated at around £25,970 ($32,675). Following closely was the Bernese Mountain Dog, recognised for its large, fluffy stature and gentle temperament. Unfortunately, these dogs face high incidences of cancer and dysplasia, with cancer treatments potentially reaching £15,000 ($20,000).
The American Bulldog claimed the third position, characterised by its strength, loyalty, and certain health vulnerabilities like hip dysplasia and skin allergies. Rottweilers secured the second spot for their muscular build and susceptibility to hip and elbow dysplasia. The top spot for the breed with the most expensive vet bills went to the French Bulldog. Despite its small size, this breed faces health challenges such as breathing issues and allergies, leading to potentially significant veterinary expenses.
