DWP Winter Fuel Payment still available for pensioners but you must act fast

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) is reminding pensioners that the Winter Fuel Payment is still available this year, but time is running out to claim it. Initially worth up to £300 annually, this payment is currently open to all individuals above the state pension age. However, a proposal by the Labour Party seeks to introduce means testing for this benefit, potentially reducing the number of eligible pensioners drastically.

The new proposal, set to be voted on by MPs, could narrow down the recipients from the current 11.4 million to just 1.5 million pensioners. Those who already receive Pension Credit will continue to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment. Additionally, there are hundreds of thousands of households across the UK eligible for the benefit but have not yet claimed it.

To apply for Pension Credit and subsequently the Winter Fuel Payment, households must submit their applications by December 21. Pension Credit is available for individuals of State Pension age with low incomes residing in England, Scotland, or Wales. It is separate from the State Pension, and possession of savings, private pensions, or property ownership does not necessarily disqualify individuals from receiving it.

Recently, the DWP has seen a surge in Pension Credit claims, with 38,500 applications in the last five weeks alone. A government spokesperson emphasised the need to target support towards those in most need due to the current economic challenges. They highlighted that over a million pensioners will still receive the Winter Fuel Payment, and additional support such as the £150 Warm Home Discount will also be available from October to assist with energy bills during the winter season.

Pensioners are encouraged to check their eligibility for Pension Credit to ensure they can access the necessary financial support. Claims for Pension Credit can be made online or by calling 0800 99 1234. The deadline for applications is approaching, so households are urged to act promptly to secure their entitlement to the Winter Fuel Payment and other essential benefits.
