**New Suicide Prevention Service Launched in Wales**
On World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), the Welsh Government unveiled a new national advice service dedicated to supporting those affected by suicide. Mental Health Minister Sarah Murphy has affirmed the commitment to providing compassionate support services to all individuals impacted by suicide and bereavement when needed. This initiative follows the release of the latest ONS data revealing an increase in deaths by suicide in Wales in 2023.
The newly established National Advisory and Liaison Service, shaped by insights from individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide, aims to assist anyone affected, exposed, or bereaved by suicide or sudden unexplained deaths that could indicate suicide. The service will offer immediate and caring support, including ongoing contact from a dedicated liaison officer and assistance in accessing additional services.
Accessible via phone, in person, or video call, the free and confidential service provides a safe space for individuals to share their feelings and practical help such as aid with funeral arrangements or inquest procedures. It extends its support not only to immediate family members but to anyone impacted by suicide, whether a friend, colleague, neighbour, or witness.
The Jac Lewis Foundation, a Welsh charity known for its local suicide bereavement support services, has been commissioned by the Welsh Government to deliver the national service. This development also includes new guidance for various agencies and organisations that play crucial roles in supporting individuals through bereavement following a possible suicide.
During a visit to the Jac Lewis Foundation in Swansea, Mental Health and Early Years Minister Sarah Murphy highlighted the importance of providing compassionate support to those affected by suicide and emphasized the significance of timely and effective assistance. The ongoing Suicide and Self-harm Prevention Strategy aims to explore further measures to prevent suicide within Wales.
Liz Thomas-Evans, CEO of the Jac Lewis Foundation, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to provide essential support to individuals and families affected by suicide across Wales. She affirmed the foundation’s dedication to making a positive impact in people’s lives, fostering a more empathetic and supportive community.
