Why the 20mph limit is reducing your car insurance premium

An insurance company has revealed why residents living in 20mph zones are more likely to receive discounts on their insurance premiums. Esure stated that drivers in areas with a 20mph speed limit could expect an average reduction of £50 compared to those in other areas. The Welsh Government introduced legislation in September 2023 to implement a default 20mph speed limit on Welsh roads previously set at 30mph. Since this nationwide limit was put in place, Esure reported a significant 20% decrease in car accident claims in Wales.

Peter Martin-Simon, Esure’s CCO, explained to WalesOnline that the reduced accident rates in 20mph zones directly impact insurance costs. Following a three-month comparison period between areas with and without 20mph limits, Esure lowered premiums by an average of £50 for drivers in the restricted zones. Martin-Simon clarified that the discounts were not applicable across all of Wales but only in areas with the 20mph speed restrictions. He emphasised that the decrease in accidents and subsequent lower repair costs were reflected in the insurance premiums of eligible drivers.

While discussing the broader context of insurance pricing, Martin-Simon acknowledged that various factors influence premiums, resulting in differing costs for individuals. Despite the overall rise in insurance prices in recent years, attributed partly to the impact of Covid-19 and increased repair costs due to inflation, Esure maintained that the evidence supported the effectiveness of 20mph limits in enhancing road safety. The company’s adoption of a new data platform enabled quick assessments of accident data, affirming the positive impact of the speed restrictions on accident frequency and severity.
