People claiming benefits like Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and Universal Credit (UC) could have unknowingly put their income at risk this summer due to a new reporting system at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Holidays and time spent outside of the UK can have a significant impact on benefits, with UC and PIP being particularly affected. While some claimants may already be aware of this, others might be unknowingly jeopardising their payments.
UC claimants are required to officially report their travel to the DWP, indicating “any past, present, or future visits” to countries outside of Britain. They must inform the department if they are planning to travel abroad in the next 30 days or have recently been on holiday since their claim began. Detailed information about the trip, including the reason, dates, and destination, must be provided.
Individuals receiving UC can travel abroad for up to one month at a time, with a mandatory period of at least one month spent back in the UK between trips. Exceptions exist for circumstances such as a close relative’s death or medical treatment, allowing for additional time abroad. Nonetheless, if the absence does not meet the criteria, UC entitlements may be reduced to zero by the following payment date.
While the DWP stated that most cases would not see such extreme reductions, they cautioned against delayed reporting of changes, as this could lead to overpayment requiring repayment. Failure to report changes or providing incorrect information about one’s circumstances could result in legal consequences, including court action or penalties.
For individuals on PIP, Attendance Allowance, or Disability Living Allowance, reporting is required if away for four weeks or more; however, benefits can generally be received for up to 13 weeks abroad. This duration may be extended for medical treatments.
