Approximately 11,000 patients are being contacted by a hospital trust over incorrect blood test results, with some potentially misdiagnosed as diabetic. Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust revealed an “intermittent issue” with the machine that analyses HbA1c blood tests on specific dates in April and July. An HbA1c blood test measures average blood sugar levels, crucial in diagnosing and managing diabetes. People with diabetes typically have higher HbA1c levels than non-diabetics.
The trust identified that tests analysed on machines at the laboratory in Luton and Dunstable University Hospital were affected, specifically impacting HbA1c blood tests. The affected patients, spread across Luton, south Bedfordshire, and Hertfordshire, are being invited for retests as a precaution. The trust assured patients saying, “You may receive calls asking for re-testing. Please avoid contacting the hospital or GP for retesting queries.”
In a statement, the trust expressed regret for any distress caused, promising a thorough review to prevent recurrences and ensure patient safety. The issue underscores the critical mission of healthcare providers, striving for accuracy and diligence in diagnoses and patient care.
