An inquest will be held next year into the tragic death of 37-year-old Natalie Buss, who died after choking during a marshmallow game at Beddau RFC in RCT. Mrs. Buss, from Church Village, participated in a game where participants tried to fit as many marshmallows in their mouths. After the competition, she collapsed in a corridor and choked. Despite CPR efforts, she could not be revived and passed away on the scene.
During a pre-inquest review on Wednesday, it was revealed that Christopher Gibbons, an entertainer hired by the club for a fundraising event, had introduced the game. Following the incident, Gibbons stopped including the game in his performances. The inquest, likely to be held next year, will focus on risk assessment, risk mitigation, and the circumstances leading to Mrs. Buss’ death.
Coroner Gavin Knox explained that the inquest would involve a jury due to the potential classification of Mrs. Buss’ death as resulting from a notifiable accident, necessitating further investigation. Apologies were extended to the family for potential delays in the inquest process. Testimonies from Mrs. Buss’ husband, the entertainer, paramedics present during the incident, and her GP are expected. Only Gibbons and Mrs. Buss’ family are considered interested parties in the case.
After her death, Beddau RFC and the community expressed deep sorrow, acknowledging the loss of a beloved individual. Floral tributes were left at the club, and a statement conveyed heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Buss’ family and friends.
