Plans for the regeneration of a derelict part of Cardiff have been submitted to Cardiff Council. The Cardiff Peninsula site, previously known as Cardiff Pointe, was part of a “world-class” redevelopment that was never fully completed, leaving the land near the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay vacant. The Cardiff Peninsula Consortium, appointed master developer for the site in September 2023, aims to revive the redevelopment with new ambitious plans.
The consortium has already received approval for the first phase of a six-part redevelopment, including new upmarket flats and houses. The full masterplan now includes new 3D images showcasing the proposed transformation of the area. If approved, the regeneration project will feature cafes, shops, restaurants, a market square, a new high street, bayside promenade, homes, an innovation hub, a business quarter, a hotel, public gardens, and a water taxi connecting Cardiff Peninsula to Cardiff Bay.
Detailed planning applications for each new building and quarter will be submitted in the coming years. In the meantime, temporary uses of the site, such as a food market and padel tennis courts, have been proposed. The goal is to create a vibrant community with workspaces, homes, public spaces, gardens for seasonal markets and events, and play areas for children. The Cardiff Peninsula Consortium aims to make the area a focal point for leisure, work, and community activities, benefitting residents and visitors alike.
The vision for the Cardiff Peninsula site includes green spaces, modern amenities, and opportunities for social gatherings. The consortium’s spokesperson expressed their desire to establish a bustling and attractive destination that utilises the spectacular location to its fullest potential. The proposed redevelopment is expected to bring new life to the abandoned wasteland, adding value to the local community and enhancing the appeal of Cardiff as a whole.
