‘Hope’ as UK patient is first in Europe to get ‘vital’ new cancer jab

A cancer patient in Birmingham is the first person in Europe to participate in a groundbreaking clinical trial for a new pancreatic cancer vaccine. Pancreatic cancer is known to be one of the most lethal forms of cancer, and the launch of the trial in Europe has brought a sense of hope to patients. This trial, conducted at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, offers a customised vaccine tailored to each individual patient to train the immune system to target and destroy cancer cells.

The vaccine, named BNT122 and developed by BioNTech and Genentech, utilises mRNA technology similar to the Covid vaccines, but uniquely tailored for each patient. The trial will focus on patients who have undergone surgery to remove pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, a particularly aggressive type of cancer. The vaccine aims to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence post-surgery. Patients will receive multiple doses of the vaccine intravenously over a specified period, alongside or following chemotherapy.

Dr. Chris Macdonald from Pancreatic Cancer UK emphasised the significance of this trial, highlighting the limited treatment options currently available for pancreatic cancer. The hope is that this vaccine could be a crucial new approach in combating this deadly disease. This development is a significant step forward in addressing the low survival rates of pancreatic cancer, with less than a 7% five-year survival rate in the UK.

Furthermore, Cancer Research UK has launched a study to pinpoint the moment when the immune system recognises a tumour, with hopes of early detection to enable more effective treatment strategies. The study aims to understand how the immune system responds to cancer cells during early stages of tumour development, potentially revolutionising cancer immunotherapies.

Dr. Heather Machado from the University of Cambridge expressed optimism about the research’s potential to enhance cancer treatment and early detection methods. This cutting-edge approach could lead to improved immunotherapies and higher survival rates for cancer patients. The study has been awarded a £1.5 million grant by Cancer Research UK and is expected to provide valuable insights into the immune response to tumours.
