Two men have been charged with burglary after a Banksy painting was stolen from a London gallery on Sunday, the Metropolitan Police reported. Larry Fraser, 47, and James Love, 53, faced charges of non-residential burglary and were held in police custody. The incident occurred at a gallery in New Cavendish Street, west London, around 11 pm on Sunday.
The stolen artwork, named “Girl with Balloon”, was the sole item taken but has since been recovered and will be returned to the gallery, according to the police. Fraser, residing in Evelyn Denington Road, Beckton, east London, and Love, residing in Elvin Drive, North Stifford, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court where they were granted bail pending their appearance at Kingston Crown Court on October 9.
The heist prompted an investigation leading to the arrest and subsequent charges against the two suspects involved. The painting, a notable piece by the elusive artist Banksy, holds significant cultural and artistic value, further intensifying the gravity of the crime committed.
