Denis Coles, now 73, was brought to justice for violating the young girl as she walked home from Girl Guides in Cardiff all those years ago.
The impact of Coles’ cruel sexual violence in 1977 was brought to light in Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, September 13, 2024. Using modern DNA techniques, police linked semen samples from the victim’s clothes to the elderly man residing in a care home in Rumney, Cardiff. Coles, appearing in court via video link with white hair and a blue jumper, sat in a large armchair as the court detailed the attack from 47 years earlier. The victim’s words describing the impact it had on her were read out, expressing the trauma and fear she experienced at just 11 years old.
The victim recounted the horrific night, stating, “The night I was raped was the most traumatic time of my life. I was just 11 years old and enjoying my evening at Girl Guides and never saw this coming.” She revealed the lasting impact the assault had on her mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and nightmares. The victim also shared her suicide attempt at 12 years old due to the trauma she endured.
Following the cold case review, the victim was shocked when police officers arrived at her home to inform her that Coles had been identified as her attacker. She expressed the emotional turmoil of having to relive the nightmare and the impact it had on her mental health and daily life. Though Coles was deemed unfit to plead due to cognitive impairment from a stroke, the judge acknowledged the victim’s suffering and fear during the assault.
The trial in Cardiff Crown Court resulted in Coles being made subject to a supervision order for two years and sex offender notification requirements for eight years. The judge acknowledged the victim’s enduring pain and wished her well in the future. Despite the delay in proceedings, the victim expressed a sense of justice finally being served after more than 40 years of suffering due to the man who changed her life with one heinous act.
