A woman was attacked and knocked unconscious in a violent incident outside a pub in Ynysybwl, Rhondda Cynon Taf. The assault left 65-year-old Angela Owen seriously injured after she was headbutted by 31-year-old Zac Morris-Lloyd, who had been drinking heavily before the altercation.
The distressing incident occurred in the car park of the Roberttown Hotel, where Morris-Lloyd had consumed eight pints of beer and whiskey, prompting emotional outbursts related to his late mother. Following an altercation inside the pub, Morris-Lloyd was escorted outside where the violence escalated.
Prosecutor Pamela Kaiga described how Morris-Lloyd headbutted Mrs. Owen as captured on video footage, leading to her immediate collapse on the ground, unconscious. Mrs. Owen sustained injuries to her face and body, necessitating ongoing physiotherapy for a shoulder injury requiring surgery.
During the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Morris-Lloyd had a prior conviction for drink-driving and a caution for assault. Despite remorse expressed by Morris-Lloyd’s defence counsel, the judge, Recorder Andrew Hammond, highlighted the severity of the attack on an elderly woman and the lasting impact on Mrs. Owen and her family.
Recorder Hammond issued a suspended 10-month prison sentence to Morris-Lloyd, emphasising the need for him to address his alcohol-fuelled behaviour. Additionally, Morris-Lloyd was instructed to maintain sobriety for the next 120 days, complete 120 hours of unpaid work, and pay compensation and victim surcharge to Mrs. Owen.
The incident, which left Mrs. Owen’s daughter fearing for her mother’s life, underscored the danger of alcohol-fuelled violence in public spaces. The court’s decision aimed to hold Morris-Lloyd accountable for his actions while providing an opportunity for rehabilitation and preventing future harm to the community.
