Y Muni, a beloved arts and music venue in the heart of Pontypridd, Wales, is reopening after a multi-million-pound redevelopment. The landmark had been closed since 2018 due to financial difficulties. The Levelling Up Funding of £5.3m has transformed the building into a thriving cultural centre, with an official reopening scheduled for September 14, 2024.
The project was a collaboration between Awen Cultural Trust and RCT Council, after Awen Cultural Trust proposed a vision for the venue’s future in 2019. The reopening event, Ponty Live, will feature performances by local and national artists, including AC/DC drummer Chris Slade, Aled Jones, and Shaun Ryder. The venue will host a range of events, including Free Music Fridays, comedy clubs, dementia-friendly concerts, and a cinema programme.
Y Muni, originally a Wesleyan Chapel in 1895, has retained its historic charm with restored gothic features such as stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings. The building has been made more accessible and environmentally friendly, with new lifts, toilets, solar panels, insulation, and boilers installed. The auditorium, which can accommodate 300 seated and 400 standing guests, has been acoustically treated for live music events.
The foyer has been redesigned with new seating areas and a mezzanine bar, offering a more comfortable experience for visitors. Additionally, the venue now has projection and cinema capabilities for diverse events. On the reopening, cabinet members Bob Harris and Mark Norris expressed delight at the venue’s revival and its significance for arts and culture in Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taf.
The redevelopment aims to maintain Y Muni’s legacy as a cultural hub while enhancing its music focus. The upcoming events at Y Muni will cater to a wide range of interests, including music, comedy, and film screenings. The renovation has not only restored the building’s architectural beauty but also modernised its facilities to provide a memorable experience for its patrons.
