The rare rainforests of Wales have emerged as a hidden gem in the Welsh landscape. While rainforests often bring to mind faraway locations like Borneo or the Amazon, Wales boasts its own unique and incredible temperate rainforests. These forests are globally rare and face more threats than tropical rainforests. Wales offers an ideal environment for these rainforests, which can be found along the west coast of the UK, spanning across regions such as West coast of Scotland, North and west Wales, Devon, Cornwall, Cumbria, and parts of Northern Ireland.
According to the Woodland Trust, rainforests in the UK are among the most biodiverse habitats. The combination of high humidity and a narrow temperature range provides perfect conditions for various moisture-loving plants like lichens and bryophytes (mosses and liverworts). A typical example of this habitat could host over 200 species of bryophytes and 100-200 species of lichen. The UK holds a significant responsibility to protect many of these species due to their limited global distribution.
Wales is home to several temperate rainforests, and sites like Coed Llechwedd Einion, Coed Cwm Einion, Coed Felenrhyd & Llennyrch, Coed Cymerau Isaf, Coed Ganllwyd, and Coed Cadair offer visitors a glimpse into these fascinating ecosystems. These ancient woodlands are rich in diverse species of lichens and liverworts, creating a beautiful and lush environment for exploration.
Despite their importance, rainforests in Wales are under threat from factors such as invasive species, diseases like ash dieback, high levels of grazing primarily by deer, and uncertainty concerning the future support of rural areas and woods. In particular, Rhododendron has proven to be a troublesome invasive species, hindering the regeneration of woodlands and lowering the overall biodiversity of the area.

The Woodland Trust’s Rainforest Appeal aims to raise awareness and funds to support the long-term management and protection of these unique habitats.
