The chain of tragedies began when Melanie’s father passed away from lung cancer in March. Shortly after, her business partner and the father of her children, Todd Young, also succumbed to the same illness. Now, Melanie, aged 45, has received the distressing news that she has only six months to live following her own diagnosis.
The situation is compounded by the fact that Melanie’s four children, the youngest of whom is just 7 years old, are still grappling with the recent losses of their grandfather and father. This condition has led to a diagnosis of emphysema, with Melanie’s lungs currently functioning at only 25% capacity. The situation is further complicated by a rare genetic condition called dystonia, which Melanie has been battling for the past 10 years. Dystonia causes involuntary muscle contractions and spasms, with no known cure currently available.
In a bid to offer some hope, a lung and heart transplant have been considered, but the risks associated with the surgery are high, especially given Melanie’s condition.
