A mum who used to consume 12 bags of crisps a day has shed a remarkable 17st in just two years, with the aim of being more active with her daughter. Sarah Clarke, 35, reached a peak weight of 31st 6lbs and a size 32, relying on food to deal with personal trauma. Sarah’s daily diet included large kebabs, chocolates, and a multipack of 12 crisps. However, a diagnosis of sleep apnoea and the inability to keep up with her 11-year-old daughter prompted a change.
After losing 3st 13lbs through Slimming World, Sarah underwent a gastric sleeve operation on the NHS, resulting in a total weight loss of 17st 5lbs. Currently at a healthy weight of 14st 1lb and size 16, Sarah has transitioned to home-cooked nutritious meals but grapples with excess skin. Despite multiple rejections for skin removal surgery on the NHS, Sarah is striving to raise £10k for the operation to erase the reminders of her past struggles.
Reflecting on her journey, Sarah, who leads a mental health peer support group, shared her newfound confidence and perseverance. She disclosed her emotional eating habits as a coping mechanism for trauma, which eventually led to addiction. Sarah expressed gratitude for breaking free from the obesity cycle and embracing a healthier lifestyle for herself and her daughter.
Sarah’s battle with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and sleep apnoea contributed to her decision to transform her life. Her motivation to be a more involved and energetic parent fueled her weight loss journey, starting with Slimming World and culminating in gastric sleeve surgery. Transitioning to a healthier post-operative lifestyle, Sarah encountered challenges adjusting to her new body but remained dedicated to self-care and positivity.
Following her weight loss, Sarah has reclaimed her health, conquering sleep apnoea and engaging in physical activities she once found difficult, such as going to the gym and walking. However, the lingering challenge of excess skin impedes her freedom and confidence, motivating her to fundraise for the surgery. Denied NHS support three times, Sarah presses on to attain her goal weight for a chance at skin removal, addressing the lasting impact of her past struggles on her present life.
Sarah’s resilience and determination to overcome obstacles inspire others facing similar challenges to believe in their capacity for change and growth. Embracing her journey towards self-acceptance and wellbeing, Sarah embodies a beacon of hope for those striving to break free from the chains of unhealthy habits and reclaim their lives.
